The X Alliance, a coalition formed by the organizations Freedom from Hunger, Lutheran World Relief, and Impact Alliance, seeks to establish an integrated approach to improving public health in severely impoverished rural communities by helping to build, equip and staff rural clinics.   The Alliance will begin by reaching out to rural villages in need of health services to determine which are most in need of, and willing to accomodate, a local health clinic.  Providing the tools and resources necessary to build the structure, the Alliance will then involve the local community in the physical construction of the clinic.  Meanwhile, a website will be set up which will allow donors abroad to purchase all of the equipment necesary to stock the clinic -- for example, a donor would be able to buy a hospital bed for $100, a set of tools necessary to perform basic surgeries for $50, and so forth.  The Alliance will also reach out to community members -- with special emphasis on women -- who are interested in becoming health practitioners.  To that end, the Alliance will seek out medical students in nearby cities who are willing to participate in a fellowship program in which they would train community members to become local health practitioners.     The training of the health practitioners will be funded through online micro-finance, much in the way <a href="http://pact.inklingmarkets.com/Kiva.html">Kiva</a> works.  After their training and the construction of the clinic, the new health practitioners will be provided with general health care kits (whose cost will also be included in the micro-financing) which will allow them to practice the new skills they have learned.  The kits will include not only basic medical supplies, but also a bicycle which will allow them to access nearby communities in need of health services.  The new clinic will charge small amounts for its services, which will allow the clinic to continue functioning as well as to generate income for the health care workers.  As the clinic becomes profitable, the health care practitioners will pay back their education and health care kit (which were micro-financed), thus allowing the Alliance to replicate this model in other communities.

Creating a home base for life and livelihood; fostering stability and sustainability in resettled communities through social entrepreneurship   Our project focuses on home building and small business development.   Partnering with Kiva it will transform the organizations's reach to include refugee populations and create an enabling environment to foster livelihood opportunities and build community infrastructure. Leveraging the unique knowledge and comparative advantages of Ashoka, IRC, and Habitat for Humanity, Foundations for the Future will help to expand Kiva's reach to the most vulnerable populations   Our unique alliance establishes the foundations for sustainability and innovation by particularly focusing on environmentally friendly and socially responsible business practices. IRC is experienced in working with refugee populations, and has a history of successful resettlement programs. Through their community connections, the Ashoka/IRC/Habitat Alliance would identify communities, groups, and/or individuals that could benefit from housing assistance and small business development. Ashoka would assist and encourage small business development in homes provided by Habitat in those communities. Introducing new populations to Kiva's services, the organization's reach would greatly increase and scope of projects be dramatically diversified.

Our proposed initiative seeks to create a demand-side intervention, using a <a href="http://pact.inklingmarkets.com/Kiva.html">Kiva</a> framework to support local health and education sectors.  This initiative builds on the success of <a style="color: #0a42aa;" href="http://pact.inklingmarkets.com/Global-Giving.html">Global Giving</a> and <a style="color: #0a42aa;" href="http://pact.inklingmarkets.com/Kiva.html">Kiva</a> by using the existing top-down structure that both organizations have in place, utilizing the Gates Foundation grant to help build and initially support the markets.  The model will be based on capacity building portfolios, which will support local markets rather than individuals. For example, an association of HIV/AIDS technical experts in a community will work with AED to establish a capacity building program, which will then be put up on the <a style="color: #0a42aa; text-decoration: none;" href="http://pact.inklingmarkets.com/Kiva.html">Kiva</a> and/or <a style="color: #0a42aa;" href="http://pact.inklingmarkets.com/Global-Giving.html">Global Giving</a> websites, where potential investors will be able to choose which portfolio they would like to support.  The consortium will capitalize on the established field networks and infrastructure from Save the Children; the academic expertise and exchange experience of World Learning; and the academic credentials, capacity building and resources of Academy of Educational Development. We will utilize the resources of the existing local markets and the investments from the private sector. The intervention is innovative as it is a demand-side approach, enabling the participation of the local community, with a bottom-up focus and structure.  It also allows for crowdsourcing to indicate which goods and services may be the most necessary for particular communities and regions.

With this project, we hope to create more of an interactive and personal experience for the Kiva Lenders and Kiva Entrepreneurs. Kiva Communties will be an interactive website which will look similar to google earth. By clicking on "Your Community" you will see your town and all of the people in need of Kiva support. Lenders will be able to see the linkages and the stories within the community. By seeing how each individual Kiva Entrepreneurs is a vital part of the community, lenders will be more invested in loaning again and learning about the community they are now part of.   Here a few components to this project: Community Chatroom: Lenders and Entrepreneurs can post or chat in this space. Lenders can find common interests and create lending teams. Community Newsfeed: Each project will report in at least once a month and this will go up on an optional newsfeed. This newsfeed will also include notes from the local leaders as well an indepth bio of one of the entrepreneurs and their lenders. There can also be a hard copy newsletter that can be sent to those not computer literate. Community Education: Classrooms, and organizations such as the Boy Scouts can become Kiva Lenders. Raising money to sponsor a project that they choose and then re-investing the money returned. This provides awareness Kiva Kids: Recognizing that education is the first step to the next generation of entrepreneurs, Kiva Lenders can sponsor a child by helping pay for they education, food, medicine. Community Store: Kiva Entrepreneurs can sell the wares that they made thanks to the Kiva Lenders. Come visit: Lenders can pay for a tour of their city where they will be meeting the people they helped as well as using and buying the things they helped finance. Community Programs: Local based NGOs and community leaders, can also look for sponsorship on Kiva Communities. Posting ideas and programs they wish to run such as a Maternal Health education series and connecting with lenders who want to sponsor them.   Communities that wish to become a Kiva Community will apply to Kiva. We will be looking for local NGOs, local leaders to form partnerships. These partnerships will help us coordinate the newsfeed and find people looking for Kiva support in the town.

Sustainable poverty-reduction by mobilizing the non-bankable poor to support and help fund their own community development. <a href="http://dpmi-miis.wiki.zoho.com/Technoserve.html">Technoserve</a> will boost local economic engines by investing in promising entrepreneurial ideas to promote the flow from "unbankable" to "bankable" community members, who will then serve to build and expand the capacity of microfinance institutions as well as invest a portion of their profits in local social services and projects managed by <a href="http://dpmi-miis.wiki.zoho.com/Care.html">Care</a> and through networks provided by White Ribbon Alliance.  The big idea is to build bridges, from lenders to enterpreneurs, from entrepreneurs to local microfinance institutions, and from entrepreneurs to local social services and projects creating a sustainable and self-reliant community. Objectives: 1. Strengthen micro-finance services and accessibility to the bankable poor: Capacity building for current intermediary and MFIs as well as training current local service NGOs to become sustainable and accountable. A strong accountability monitoring system will be established that will work with both GG and Kiva. Fix bottleneck. 2. Strengthen non-bankable poor’s ability to become bankable citizens: This transition will increase Kiva’s market and allow <a href="http://dpmi-miis.wiki.zoho.com/Global-Giving.html">Global Giving</a> to focus more specifically on social programs instead of microfinance or business-driven programs. As the bankable poor become more self-sustaining, they will become the drivers of the community micro-finance projects for the non-bankable poor.
